Part 2 Project 1 Excercise 1 Detail & tone

The pictures below indicate the progression of my sketch of a natural rock or stone I acquired from a local beach. I set up the stone on a small black table near a window with light coming in from the right. The shadow fell in front of the stone. I used watercolour pencils again and some slight wash. The stone had several small nodules and holes. I think I got the essence of it’s form but I’m still not sure about the medium…pencils! I did get carried away however with the background. I was trying to focus on negative shapes and coloured the background edge black. I wanted to depict the roundness of the table and to make my image stand out. I began with round swirls of colour that I thought would harmonise with the stone. I like exploring and experimenting with colour. The shadow area I had initially done in dark grey tiny lines and I progressed and toned this into a wash in the final image. When ideas flow I tend to have to go with them! I am conscious that I drew the stone from a higher perspective looking down on it.
